High Relief Wood Carving - A Time-Honored Craft
Welcome to the online gallery of James Atkin. Jim is a high relief woodcarver who lives on Vancouver Island in BC, Canada. He hopes that you will enjoy these unique woodcarvings as much as he loves to create them.
High relief woodcarving is a time-honored craft that creates three-dimensional images from the wood in intricate detail. The meticulous process combines the imagination of an artist and patient skill of a sculptor with the foresight of an engineer. Jim’s style of carving requires very dense woods such as teak, padauk, and black walnut. The meticulous work itself takes many, many hours of drawing, preparing, carving, carving, carving and finally hours, sometimes days of sanding and finishing the piece. Each carving takes several months and even over a year from inspiration to completion.
Nature also contributes to these amazing works of art adding vibrant colour and the graceful movement of natural wood grains making each woodcarving a very special work of art.
